Tomorrow, I set sail for lands wonderful and strange in equal measure.
...
Okay, so I’m actually going to Germany.

Good, good ... what are your plans?

Standing in line with a bunch of sweaty nerds to get an early look at some video games, mainly. That and beer/sausage/various meats.

Sounds like you’re going to Cologne!

Indeed! We’re staying in Dusseldorf, though, ‘cause booking hotels in Cologne itself is hard when Gamescom’s on. It’ll only be about an hour on the train to get to the show.

And thats why I have relatives strategically stationed in Düsseldorf and Grevenbroich.

I attempted something similar, but my familial/friendly network of free hotels is limited to Luxembourg, Australia and, oddly, Bristol.
Since it’s three of us sharing a room, it didn’t work out too pricey, anyway. Right now I’m trying to work out if the bag I have is small enough to get by Ryanair’s notoriously strict baggage regs.

Don’t Ryanair allow two bags now? The second has to be very small of course.

They do, but the second one’s absolutely titchy - like, genuinely not much bigger than my camera bag with just the attached lens - so... Well, I’m using it for my camera bag.#
I know I’ll be able to fit enough stuff for the four days we’ll be there in the larger cabin bag; I just want to make sure I don’t accidentally go too large, and get caught out at the gate.

Here’s hoping the trains don’t suck. Grab a beer for me while you’re there ... there is beer at the GC, right?
